In the late 1930s he became a GP, and then an East End hospital doctor, amidst the ravages of poverty and tuberculosis. He studied medicine at St John's College, Cambridge, where he also learned to fly. The son of a Cambridge law professor, he was educated at Shrewsbury school. My uncle Bernard Winfield, who has died aged 93, was a doctor and philanthropist who touched many lives.
